Pretoria North mom killed in pick-axe attack, son (3) seriously injured

The community of Hammanskraal turned on the dead woman's husband, accusing him of the brutal attack. He was rescued by police.

A woman was allegedly beaten to death with a pick-axe while her three-year-old son was seriously injured in the attack at their house in Hammanskraal on Sunday morning.

Police and emergency services were still on scene in Mogogelo, Hammanskaal, around early afternoon, where tensions ran high. Earlier, community members allegedly assaulted the husband of the deceased woman, having accused him of being responsible for her death.

The injured man was taken to hospital by police. The brother of the victim Robert Mokwena said he saw a pick-axe covered in blood near where his sister’s body was found.

“While I did not see the body of my sister, I saw the pick-axe that I suspect was used to murder her. The pick was full of blood so you can see that it was used to bash her.”

He said that the three-year-old boy was taken to a nearby hospital.

“The boy, who was bleeding from the mouth and nose, was found lying in the street near his home.” Mokwena said they were still waiting for feedback from the hospital regarding the boy’s condition.

Police were yet to comment on the alleged attack at the time of going to print.
