Pretoria soldier shoots wife, turns gun on self
Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after a 43-year-old sergeant from Wonderboom Military Base allegedly shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself in Soshanguve, Pretoria, earlier today.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said passers-by spotted the sergeant’s car on the road in Block XX.
They found the sergeant dead inside the car with a gun between his legs, and his wife also dead in the scene with a bullet wound to her head. A toddler believed to be the couple’s child was also found inside, but unharmed.
Nkoadi added the motive for the killing has not been determined and investigations were ongoing.
This incident comes after 44-year-old ex-uMkhonto weSizwe veteran and former South African Air Force colonel Joel Mahoase allegedly killed his 33-year-old wife by throwing hand grenades at her in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, last month.
Police spokesperson, Captain Charlene van der Spuy alleged the deceased had an argument with her husband when he threw the explosives at her. Van der Spuy said the woman was taken to Kingsway Hospital by family members, where she later succumbed to the injuries she sustained.
A second live hand grenade was allegedly found at the scene.
Mahoase has since made numerous appearances in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.
