Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has passed away today at the age of 96.

The official Twitter account of the British Royal Family confirmed the news of the queen’s passing this evening.

The queen passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. All of her children gathered at the castle earlier today as doctors placed her under medical supervision.

The BBC reports the queen rose to the throne in 1952. Her eldest son, Charles, will become the new king and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

The Citizen reports that this year marked her Platinum Jubilee year, marking 70 years since she succeeded her father king George VI in 1952.

She also met with Britain’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, earlier this week.
