‘Robbery’ gone wrong: Krugersdorp jogger shoots and kills armed attacker
The armed jogger was confronted by a group of men who jumped out of a VW Golf while he was out on his morning run. When one of them pulled out a gun, things went horribly wrong for the suspected robbers.

An alleged assailant was shot and killed by a jogger (32) on a morning run in Dan Pienaarville, Krugersdorp this morning.
According to Dowry Security High-risk Tracking and K9 Unit (HRT) manager Marcel Jonker, the incident happened early this morning on the corner of Robert Broom Drive and Van Riebeeck Road.
“We received a distress call on a community WhatsApp group reading ‘Need police and ambulance urgently. One suspect down. One still hiding’.”

Jonker says at the scene a man gave the Dowry HR team members his account of the events and said that one of his assailants was hiding nearby.
The Dowry officers found the man that was hiding and detained him. Police and public safety officers arrived shortly afterwards.
Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane says the incident took place at about 04:50 and that the jogger was running on Van Riebeeck Road towards Robert Broom Drive.
“At the intersection, the jogger was passed by a [Volkswagen] Golf 1. It crossed the intersection and immediately stopped. The jogger realised that the two back doors opened, four men got out and approached him. One of the men pointed a firearm at the jogger, who took out his firearm and shot the man with the firearm in self-defence.

“A Dowry security officer responded to the scene as they got a tip-off message from a WhatsApp group. The security officer, Wynand Volkwyn, searched around and found one of the assailants hiding in a nearby flower tree which was lapping over from a yard.
“The suspect who was shot by the victim, was declared dead on the scene. An empty 9mm magazine, 10 live rounds of ammunition and money in a plastic bag was found on the deceased.
Sebonyane says a 9mm Browning pistol without a magazine was also found on the man who was killed.
He says police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating complaints of attempted armed robbery, pointing of a firearm and possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Sebonyane says the suspect (27) that was detained by the security officer, was identified by the jogger, and arrested. He will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
The other attackers are still at large, and the police are appealing to anyone who might have information about them to contact the Krugersdorp police on 011 951 1151 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Information may also be communicated via the My SAPS app or SMS number 32211 to remain anonymous.
The Krugersdorp police acting station commander Colonel Shibiri applauded the security officer for a job well done, his quick response and working hand in hand with the police to fight crime.
