Rotational stages 5 and 6 load-shedding announced for the rest of the week

Further generating capacity loss and increased maintenance see an increase in the severity of power cuts.

Stage 5 and 6 load-shedding will be implemented at various times for the rest of the week, Eskom has announced.

Spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the escalation in rolling power cuts is ‘due to the loss of four generating units’.

She explains these losses, coupled with a need to increase planned maintenance and replenish emergency generation reserves, have necessitated the increase in load-shedding.

“Breakdowns are currently at 16 784MW of generating capacity while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 4 987MW. Over 24 hours, a generation unit each at Camden, Duvha and Kendal was returned to service.

“In the same period, a generating unit each at Duvha, Grootvlei, Kendal and Matla power stations was taken offline for repairs,” Mokwena adds.
