South African-born loose forward Ruan Ackermann has ended speculations of a return home by extending his contract at Premiership club Gloucester.

Previous reports suggested a potential comeback to the country for Ackermann, with the Lions and Sharks emerging as the frontrunners.

The 28-year-old, who joined Gloucester from the Lions in 2017, has become a vital asset for the English outfit, and Ackermann’s decision potentially closes the chapter on his goal of playing for the Springboks.

Gloucester’s director of rugby George Skivington is delighted at securing Ackermann’s signature amid fierce competition, hailing it as a massive coup for the club.

Ackermann, speaking to club media, emphasised his contentment, describing Gloucester as a ‘second home’.

“Whatever role you play in the team, you need to be a leader in that role,” he said. “If you’re put in that position, it’s about not doing anything different, doing what you always do really well and trying to lead by example.”

The length of Ackermann’s new deal remains undisclosed.
