Rubber bullets used to separate marchers and foreigner nationals

Police have fired stun grenades and rubber bullets in the CBD amid clashes between foreign nationals and South Africans.

Police used teargas and threw stun grenades in the Pretoria CBD on Friday, after clashes between foreign nationals and South Africans broke out, reports the Pretoria East Rekord.

Rubber bullets were also fired.

Fights broke out ahead of the anti-foreigner march expected to take place at 12pm.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said two people suffered minor injuries amid the clashes.

“I cannot confirm the people were injured by the police or the crowd,” said Pieterse.

Gauteng provincial spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police fired the crowd control devices in an effort to separate the foreigners and South Africans.

“We are doing our best to enforce law and order at all time,” said Dlamini.

A source at the scene said the situation was getting out of hand.

Pretorians have been advised to avoid the area.

SAPS have also urged the media specifically to please avoid the area as violent protesters said that they will not tolerate any member of the media among them.
