SA wins victory for human rights in Gaza

South Africa’s request for emergency measures to stop what President Cyril Ramaphosa called the ‘ongoing slaughter of the people of Gaza’ was granted in The Hague today.

South Africa’s determination to end what it has labelled as genocide in Gaza was supported by the World Court today.

International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled this afternoon that there is sufficient urgency to order provisional measures against Israel.

South Africa presented its genocide case against Israel at the ICJ in The Hague, Netherlands, on January 11, drawing international attention.

The Israel-Palestine conflict, which has been raging for four months, has claimed thousands of lives and, according to a United Nations report, has reduced thousands of Palestinians to poverty.

“There is a compelling argument that genocide is being committed in Gaza on the basis that there is an annihilation or cleansing of a civilian population, innocent civilians, children and women that have been displaced [and] the targeting of public infrastructure in Gaza,” said Justice Minister Ronald Lamola at the time.

Today, the ICJ handed down a preliminary ruling that Israel must take steps to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza. It said Israel must punish the direct public incitement to commit genocide in its war in Gaza and must take steps to improve humanitarian conditions.

In addition, Israel must report to the court within a month on what it is doing to uphold the order.
South Africa’s request for an emergency order to stop Israel’s military operations in Gaza was not granted.
