A man wanted in connection with the murders of two crime intelligence officers has been shot and fatally wounded during a police operation in Inanda, reports Northglen News.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the suspect was killed during the operation yesterday morning (September 25).

A SAPS Special Task Force officer was also wounded in the operation.

Police have since revealed more details about the operation, including the arrest of five other men believed to be linked to the suspect.

The operation is connected to the April ambush and killing of Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo and Captain Louis Nel on Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe.

The two officers, who were attached to the SAPS Crime Intelligence unit, were travelling in an unmarked state vehicle when unknown gunmen opened fire on them.

Nel died in the attack, while Khuzwayo was airlifted to hospital. He died several weeks later from his injuries.

Acting National Commissioner of the SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, said at the time that resources had been mobilised to ‘hunt down’ those responsible for the attack.

Three-hour stand-off

Netshiunda said the suspect was killed in a shoot-out in Emaplasini, Inanda, after refusing to obey police instructions.

“The sixth suspect refused to obey police instructions and was shooting from inside the house for about three hours. Negotiations went on until he released his girlfriend who was inside the house,” Netshiunda said.

The suspect was eventually shot and fatally wounded during the operation.

A Special Task Force officer was shot in the hand but was in good spirits after receiving first aid, Netshiunda said.
