Sascoc confirms Tubby Reddy’s suspension but there’s confusion

The governing body’s statement suggests it’s based on sexual harassment allegations but a report says it’s over him breaching labour law.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) confirmed on Thursday that it has suspended chief executive Tubby Reddy following a board meeting on Wednesday evening, reports The Citizen.

However, there’s confusion as to what allegation against him led to the sanction.

According to a statement released by the governing body, the board “resolved to go ahead the SASCOC Board resolved to go ahead with the suspension of Mr Reddy with effect from Thursday 20 July 2017” following “following allegations against Mr Tubby Reddy from a staff member on sexual harassment”.

Those allegations led to a farcical situation in May, when Reddy’s accuser sent out an unconditional apology to him.

In a mail issued to the media from the staffer’s Sascoc address, it was alleged that the harassment claims had formed part of an orchestrated move by the Olympic body’s president, Gideon Sam, to oust Reddy.

Minutes later, she retracted the statement because she wasn’t the author and said an individual had unauthorised access to her computer.

Sascoc’s board has resolved to conclude the matter by 18 August.

According to Netwerk24 though, Reddy has actually been suspended on the basis of a new allegation against him related to the contravening of South African labour law.

Reddy apparently recruited a private firm to investigate staff members and only informed them after the firm handed over its report.

The board wasn’t pleased about being left in the dark.

Reddy will receive full play for the duration of his suspension.
