School bus attacked in Centurion in an attempted hijacking
The drama started when the school bus pulled over at Panorama road and Marquard street where an attempted hijacking was taking place.
A school bus driver was hit on the head with a hammer by a hijacker who then drove off with the bus in Wierdabrug on Wednesday morning, November 10.
Luckily, there were no children aboard the bus when he drove off, and the hijacker was stopped and arrested by security officers at Panorama and Marquard streets.
“The driver managed to get the children off during the incident. He suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene. No children were harmed,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Divine Nkuna.
The drama started when the school bus pulled over at Panorama and Marquard streets where an attempted hijacking was taking place.
“After pulling over, a schoolchild came running and climbed inside the bus, screaming that her mother was getting robbed. The driver looked behind and saw an unknown man running towards the bus,” Nkuna said.
“The man, holding a hammer, made his way into the bus but was forcefully removed by the driver.”
Nkuna said the driver then escorted the schoolchild to his mother’s car which was close to the bus.
“The suspect then rushed at the driver and hit him with a hammer on the head before making an escape with the school bus.
He was later stopped and arrested by the security officers,” she said.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the bus was carrying schoolchildren during the incident. Nkuna said a case of hijacking was opened.
