Search continues for second drowning victim in KZN

The need for air support, amid difficult terrain, is hampering efforts to locate the remaining missing person along the Ophongolo River.

A search operation is continuing along the Ophongolo River near Paulpietersburg after a tragic double drowning incident earlier this week, reports Northern Natal News.

Emergency teams, including Vryheid K9 Search & Rescue and Frikkie Bekker from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services, were called to the scene after reports that two people had been swept away in the river.

Air support aids recovery efforts

With the terrain proving difficult to access, air support was brought in to assist search teams. One body was located approximately one kilometre downstream from where the incident is believed to have occurred. The body was airlifted by helicopter to the nearest accessible road.

Search for second victim continues

The search for the second missing person is ongoing, with crews combing sections of the river further downstream. However, efforts have so far yielded no further results.

Challenging and dangerous conditions

A source involved in the operation, who is not authorised to speak to the media, said the search has been particularly challenging due to the remote, mountainous terrain and dangerous conditions in the river.

“It’s not easy terrain to work in. The river cuts through mountainous areas, and there is also the presence of crocodiles, which adds to the risk for teams on the ground,” the source said.

Search operations

Search operations are expected to resume once the helicopter becomes available again, as air support remains crucial in navigating the difficult landscape.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and the circumstances surrounding the drowning are still under investigation.
