Security guard shot dead in KZN

Police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting and killing of a security guard.

A security guard was shot and killed while on duty at an Isipingo shopping complex in KZN on Friday.

According to an eyewitness who was in a nearby shop on Phila Ndwandwe Road when the incident unfolded, a man allegedly confronted the security guard and shot him in the head after a brief heated conversation.

The male suspect was arrested soon after, as he tried to run away, and a firearm with live ammunition was found on him.

Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics Medical Services says when they responded, there was nothing much they could do to stabilise the security guard, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the shooting are not clear, however, the police were at the scene and will be investigating further,” says Jamieson.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and says the victim was around 50 years old.

According to available information, the victim lived in Ilfracombe, near Umgababa, and worked in the minibus taxi industry for years before leaving it to find work as a security guard.
