Security guard shot dead in Isipingo

The security guard was shot in the head after a brief heated conversation with the suspect.

A SECURITY guard was shot and killed while on duty at an Isipingo shopping complex on April 26.

According to an eyewitness who was in a nearby shop on Phila Ndwandwe Road when the incident unfolded, a man confronted the security guard. He shot him in the head after a brief heated conversation. A male suspect was arrested soon after as he tried to run away, and a firearm with live ammunition was found on him.

Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics Medical Services said when they responded, there was nothing much they could do to stabilise him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the shooting are not clear, however, the police were at the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said the victim was around 50 years old. According to available information, the victim lived in Ilfracombe, near Umgababa, and had worked in the minibus taxi industry for years before leaving it to find work as a security guard.
