Shahiel Sewpujan murder: second accused in court
The second accused in the murder of Phoenix schoolboy Shahiel Sewpujan (9) appeared in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Haripersadh and Naicker – who own the house where Sewpujan and his mother were renting – are accused of murdering the boy who was found dead and naked inside a manhole in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, last week.
Postmortem results show that Sewpujan was hit in the head with a blunt object, while his body was found badly bruised and with duct tape covering his mouth.
Naicker was arrested last week Tuesday and later appeared in court, where she was remanded into custody until her next appearance.
Haripersadh was said to be in the Intensive Care Unit of Albert Luthuli Hospital following an alleged suicide attempt, which happened a day before Sewpujan’s body was discovered.
It is believed the two women will be applying for bail, which, according to a regional NPA spokesperson, the state is opposed to.
