Shebeen scuffle in Newcastle left a trail of blood

Investigations are underway after an altercation between two groups at a shebeen in the Newcastle CBD in KwaZulu-Natal escalated onto Kirkland Street, leaving a trail of blood.

It is alleged two men and a pregnant woman were at the shebeen with a number of other patrons when another man grabbed the woman and an argument ensued on Monday, Newcastle Advertiser reported.

The woman’s husband allegedly struck the grabber with a bottle.

It was believed the man who was hit called his friends and began to chase the husband and his friends, who were by then fleeing down Kirkland Street.

According to witnesses, the attackers hit two men with bottles and stabbed one of them with a knife.

Three of the fleeing victims allegedly barred themselves inside the bulletproof glass cashier’s office of the garage.

The group of attackers continued to damage the doors and property of the shop.

ER24 transported the woman and her husband to hospital.

The woman sustained only minor bruises to her arms while her husband sustained a cut to his face.

A swift response from the Newcastle police led to the arrest of two of the attackers, while a third was treated on site for a severe head wound.

A case of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, armed robbery and malicious damage to property has been opened.

Last week, a man was arrested for allegedly stabbing another man to death in a fight at a shebeen in Moroka, Soweto, Gauteng.
