Shooter fires at taxi transporting bus depot workers in George

Two people were injured in the shooting for which the motive is unknown.

A manhunt is underway for an assailant after a shooting incident on the Thembalethu bridge at about 04:10 yesterday morning.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, a minibus taxi with Go George personnel on board was travelling towards the depot when a man carrying a firearm appeared and fired several gunshots at the vehicle.  

“The vehicle sped off and on arrival at the depot it was established that two occupants had sustained gunshot wounds to the legs. Both were taken to hospital,” he said.

Thembalethu Police opened an attempted murder docket for further investigation. The motive for the attack is yet to be established and forms part of the ongoing police investigation.

Public order police and K9 members were deployed in the area.

George Municipality confirmed the incident and said that all Go George services continued as per schedule with slight delays experienced yesterday morning.
