Shoppers trapped during armed robbery
Shoppers were trapped inside a storeroom at the Spar in Valhalla, Centurion, after armed men allegedly robbed cash-in-transit guards outside the store on Sunday.
“I saw the robber fighting with the guard for the cash. The robber then fired shots at the guard, but he wasn’t injured,” she said.
Hewitt added the shop was closed immediately, and shoppers were rushed upstairs to the storeroom for safety.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier confirmed that three armed men approached the guards in the parking area of the supermarket, Rekord Centurion reported.
According to Olivier, the men then fled in a white Audi with an undisclosed amount of money.
No injuries were reported.
Another eyewitness, Natalie Du Plessis, said she heard about five gunshots before the store manager led customers into the storeroom.
Du Plessis said shoppers remained locked in the storeroom while the armed men proceeded to rob the liquor store next door.
Olivier added a case of armed robbery was under investigation.
Last month, four armed men allegedly robbed the Lakeside Spar in Richards Bay.
The suspects reportedly forced themselves into the manager’s office while he was handing over the store’s takings to a cash-in-transit guard.
The men reportedly disarmed the guard before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
