Sixty60 driver saves unconscious woman in Hartbeespoort accident
A delivery driver stayed with an unconscious woman, even after police arrived, until her family came to the scene.
A Checkers Sixty60 driver recently braced torrential rain and risked his own safety to assist a Hartbeespoort resident after an accident.
Kormorant reports Cynthia Sealie said she was driving home along Cableway Road in heavy rain when a child ran across the road and she had to swerve to avoid a collision. She lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the bushes.
The accident, that occurred around 18:20 two weeks ago, caused Sealie to lose consciousness.
David Mwanza (28) was on his way home at about 19:00 when spotted car lights in the bushes by chance after he shook his head to get rid of water that got into his eyes.
“I think it was God’s way of making me aware of the situation. I immediately realised something strange was going on. I pulled to the side of the road although I knew it was dangerous on that road, but I knew something was wrong,” he said.
Mwanza called out several times, but when he did not get a response, he approached the car.
“A woman was unconscious inside the car. The doors were locked but her window was slightly open. I managed to push down the window and open the door.”
Mwanza, who had done a First Aid course, checked her pulse and breathing. He says she was in and out of consciousness and kept saying a name.
He managed to find her phone and looked for the name Sealie was saying. It turned out to be a family member and Mwanza informed them of what happened.
He also managed to flag down a passing police vehicle. Although police told him he could leave the scene, he stayed with Sealie until her family arrived.
“I promised I would stay with her,” he explained.
Sealie suffered a serious concussion and is still recuperating.
“I am so grateful to David, if it wasn’t for him…” she said.
