Small earthquake recorded near Praktiseer, Limpopo

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded early this morning, with no injuries or infrastructure damage reported.

A light magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded in Limpopo in the early hours this morning (May 15).

Polokwane Review reports that, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake happened at approximately 06:40.

The epicentre was located approximately 39km southwest of Praktiseer, a small mining town in the Sekhukhune District Municipality. The depth of the quake could not be precisely determined but is believed to be shallow, likely around 10km.

There were no reports of residents feeling the tremor.

The South African Weather Service, which also monitors seismic activity, has not issued any alerts or warnings related to the event.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are considered minor and occur occasionally in South Africa, and are often linked to mining activities or natural tectonic shifts in the region.

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake is generally too weak to be widely felt and is often detected only by seismographs.

Authorities have confirmed that no infrastructure damage or injuries have been reported in Praktiseer or the surrounding areas, such as Burgersfort or Ohrigstad.
