Snake escapes the claws of death in the Western Cape

A worker at a wildlife resort in the province captured a remarkable sighting of a snake and owl entangled in a battle for survival.

Nature is filled with wonderful things and sometimes we are lucky enough to witness it.

Melt Siebert of Afri Eco Resort on the N2 between Wilderness and Sedgefield photographed a rare wildlife moment when he was at work on the morning of November 30.

According to the owner of the resort, Hendro Botes, Siebert was called by other staff members when they came across an owl and an olive house snake (not venomous) in a very sticky situation.

Siebert found the snake and the owl entangled in what seemed like a battle for survival.

“We suspect the owl caught the snake, flew away with it, and the snake started to strangle the owl. Maybe they crash-landed, and we got to them when the fight was going strong. I’m just glad we could save both of them. They both had some battle scars,” says Botes.

At first Siebert didn’t see the snake and thought the owl was injured. “I thought the owl was injured and wanted to help him. When I got closer I saw the snake around the owl,” adds Siebert.

The snake can be seen wrapped around parts of the owl. Don’t let the owl’s eyes freak you out, the photo was taken as the bird blinked.

It was indeed a happy ending for all when Siebert was able to gently remove the snake from the owl using a stick and without injuring either of them.

“The snake slithered into the grass and the owl sat for a while before it flew off,” says Botes.
