Soldiers discover human remains in field outside Oudtshoorn
Police have opened an inquest after human remains were found near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.
Human remains were discovered in an open field outside Oudtshoorn on the Calitzdorp Road yesterday (5 August), reports Oudtshoorn Courant.
According to information received, soldiers stationed at the Oudtshoorn Infantry School made the discovery.
It has also been alleged that the remains were removed from the scene by helicopter, although this could not be officially confirmed.
An enquiry was sent to the Department of Defence, but no response had been received by the time of publication.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened following the discovery.
“According to the information available at this stage, police were summoned to the scene after the remains were discovered. Upon arrival, officers were directed to the area where the human remains were found. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established,” said Spies.
Police have not yet released any further information, and the investigation is ongoing.
