Stage 6 to be implemented this afternoon

Eskom says that although three of the 10 units that tripped overnight were returned to service, it is not enough to prevent stage 6 load-shedding.

As warned earlier, Eskom has just announced that stage 6 load-shedding will be implemented from 16:00 today. The power utility says the increase in the stage of load-shedding is due to an ongoing unlawful strike.

The schedule for the today and tomorrow is as follows:

  • Stage 6: Today from 16:00 until 22:00.
  • Stage 4: Today from 22:00 until midnight.
  • Stage 2: From midnight until 05:00 tomorrow morning.
  • Stage 4: Tomorrow from 05:00 until 16:00.
  • Stage 6: Tomorrow from 16:00 until 22:00.

Eskom says the strike has caused widespread disruptions at powerplants.

During a emergency media briefing earlier today, Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer said they cannot rule out the possibility of intentional damage or sabotage as it was reported yesterday that the system was ‘slowly but surely’ recovering, then everything seemed to go wrong overnight with 10 units tripping.

Eskom says that three of the 10 units have since been returned to the grid. The power utility warned that load-shedding schedules might change at short notice depending on the state of the grid, to protect the plant from damage.

Stage 6 load-shedding was implemented once before, in December 2019.
