Steroids and drugs seized in raid on Pionier High School, KZN

The suspended learners were found to be in possession of contraband, including steroids, marijuana, a knife and drug paraphernalia, but no arrests have been made.

Several learners have been suspended, following a raid on Pionier High School and the Pionier hostel on Monday, Vryheid Herald reports.

The suspended learners were found to be in possession of contraband, including steroids, marijuana, a knife and drug paraphernalia, but no arrests have been made.

The principal of Pionier High, Riaan Muller explains the raid was ‘standard procedure’ and was carried out according to a directive from the Department of Education.

“It’s nothing big,” explains Muller. “It’s certainly not even newsworthy. We carry out these spot checks on a regular basis, at least annually. The Department of Education motivates for schools to do so. We aim to promote and encourage a drug-free society at our school.”

It remains speculation that some of the suspended learners were dropped from Pionier High’s rugby team, ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

Muller says the learners implicated, however, were so-called ‘gym boys’ and bodybuilders.
