Stormy week ahead: Weather alerts include rain, snow and freezing temperatures

Forecasters warn of heavy rain, snow and storms across multiple provinces this week as disaster teams are placed on high alert.

Chilly weather is sweeping across parts of South Africa this week, with forecasters warning of possible light snow over the Lesotho mountain peaks and stormy conditions moving through several provinces — but which areas will be among those feeling the freeze?

According to Pretoria Rekord, Vox Weather forecaster Michelle du Plessis said a strong upper-air trough could potentially cut off and develop into a cut-off low tomorrow and Wednesday.

“Heavy rain is expected in KZN tomorrow (around 50mm over the central, western and southern parts, and more than 100mm along the southern coast, which could lead to flooding) and along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape.”

According to South Coast Herald, residents across large parts of KZN are urged to take extreme caution following the issuance of a Level 4 weather warning for disruptive rain by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

The warning is valid from early tomorrow until midnight.

In response to this severe weather warning, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has directed that all disaster management teams across the affected municipalities be placed on high alert. These teams are ready to respond swiftly to any incidents that may occur as a result of the heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, two other warnings were issued in SAWS’ travellers forecast for tomorrow:

  • A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is expected over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, and
  • a Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rain over the southern parts of Mpumalanga.

Du Plessis added that it will then be very cold around Lesotho and the surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape, KZN and Free State, with freezing levels dropping low enough for snow late tomorrow night and Wednesday in Lesotho.

“By Friday, it will be cool (temperatures below 20°C) and cloudy [in Gauteng], with a few light rain showers.”
