Suspected drugs found at Lebombo border: Mozambican taxi driver arrested

A Toyota Quantum minibus with North West number plates – and its trailer – were searched at the port of entry.

A Mozambican taxi driver (37) was arrested at the Lebombo Border Post on Monday after he was found in possession of 50kg of suspected heroin concealed inside the trailer of the minibus he was driving.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the police working at the border stopped a Toyota Quantum minibus with North West registration plates that afternoon. He said the vehicle, which was ferrying some passengers, was searched, as was its trailer.

Suspected drugs in powder form, concealed inside plastic containers, were found in the trailer. Mdhluli says the driver was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.

He was expected to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and the outcome of the appearance is not yet known.
