Taxi hitmen handed double life terms plus 80 years for murder and robbery in KZN

A ruthless gang’s post office raid ended in tragedy when gunfire from their getaway vehicle killed an innocent woman waiting in an ATM queue.

Two convicted hitmen linked to taxi violence in KZN have been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 80 years each for murder and robbery.

The Witness reports that the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Friday handed down the heavy sentences to Muzi Sibiya (42) and Nduduzo Shezi (36) after finding them guilty of a violent 2022 post office robbery in Msinga, which left a woman dead.

On July 4, 2022, Sibiya, Shezi and at least four accomplices stormed the Tugela Ferry Mall post office, robbing employees of an undisclosed amount of cash intended for South African Social Security Agency beneficiaries. They also stole personal belongings from two staff members, and a two-way radio from a security guard.

The group fled in a getaway vehicle, opening fire as they drove away. One of the bullets struck and killed 47-year-old Nomusa Ntshele, who had been standing in an ATM queue nearby.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says officers from Msinga Police Station immediately pursued the suspects, who later abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes.

“Sibiya was found hiding inside a cave. He was in possession of the stolen jacket, a two-way radio and a portion of the stolen money,” says Netshiunda.

Investigations revealed Sibiya was a taxi driver and suspected hitman in the Msinga area. The KZN Taxi Violence Unit then took over the case.

Evidence collected from the abandoned vehicle linked Shezi to the crime. A search led detectives to a Gauteng prison, where Shezi had already been arrested by the Gauteng Taxi Violence Unit in connection with another taxi-related murder. He was charged with the Msinga robbery and murder while in custody.

Netshiunda confirmed that both men were declared unfit to possess firearms.

“The search for the other suspects involved in this case is ongoing, and police are confident of a breakthrough,” he says.
