Taxi owner shot dead in Tembisa

A case of murder has been opened after a taxi owner was shot and killed at Esangweni Taxi Rank, in Tembisa, on the East Rand.

According to eyewitnesses, the man was shot and killed by another taxi owner last night at about 6pm, Tembisan reported.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Tembisa police communications officer Captain Manyadza Ralidzivha said no arrests have been made. Police investigations are ongoing.

Last month, a woman thought to be an employee of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was shot dead and three other passengers wounded in a long-standing taxi feud that turned violent in Tembisa,

The victims were caught in the crossfire between two taxi associations who were fighting over an unnamed route at the same taxi rank.

In August, a 52-year-old taxi owner was shot dead as he closed his tavern in the Emaphipini area of Ilfracombe in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged at about 11pm, Themba Mwelase was approached by two men who asked for a lift.

Mwelase reportedly agreed, and when he stopped his vehicle for the men to get out, they turned around and fired shots at him. He was struck in the face and killed.

Earlier in that same month, video footage surfaced showing the fatal shooting of a Soweto taxi bossat a petrol station in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

In the video, taxi owner Dumisani Mthethwa is seen standing next to a minibus taxi at the service station just after 5pm.

Two assailants suddenly walked up to Mthethwa and shot him multiple times before fleeing.
