Teacher allegedly assaulted by pupil

A Grade 7 pupil from Rosslyn Primary School, north of Pretoria, has been suspended and is awaiting a disciplinary hearing after he allegedly assaulted a teacher.

The apparent assault happened after a jacket was taken away from the pupil during assembly as it did not comply with the school’s prescribed uniform, Rekord North reported.

Under the school rules, items of clothing not in adherence may be confiscated. Parents may later collect these items.

The pupil apparently then went to the Grade 6 teacher’s class after the assembly.

He was told his jacket was in the principal’s office after which he left the teacher’s classroom. He later returned with a few “friends” and allegedly started assaulting the teacher with his fists.

Provincial education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said: “The department is shocked by the alleged conduct of the learner. We condemn the conduct and do not expect such behaviour from any of our learners.”

The pupil was also accused of racist remarks made as he allegedly told the vice-principal he “does not like white people”.

Sekhonyane said the school suspended the pupils and would push ahead with the disciplinary hearing on Monday.

She added the teacher was receiving counselling.
