Teen escapes injury after attempted stabbing in La Lucia break-in

A La Lucia homeowner has recounted how his son escaped serious injury after an armed suspect gained access to his Oakleigh Avenue home.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the incident occurred at about 5am and that his son (17) suffered a small laceration to his lower abdomen after the suspect attempted to stab him using a box cutter (Stanley knife).

It is believed the suspect removed a pane of glass from one of the windows to gain access to the property, Northglen News reports.

“My wife, who was asleep, heard a scratching sound coming from underneath the bed and thought it was our cat.”

“As she opened her eyes to see what the noise was she noticed the suspect attempting to remove her laptop which was in her bag under the bed. She immediately pressed the panic button and screamed for help.”

“Both my son and I ran after him and he eventually caught up to him as we reached the garden.”

“They got into a scuffle and the suspect attempted to stab him and just cut him across his lower abdomen.”

“He then flung a bag he was carrying over into my neighbour’s yard and then began fence hopping to escape the scene,” he explained.

When security and the Durban North SAPS arrived on scene, they found the bag which had been discarded in the neighbour’s driveway.

A brand-new bolt cutter, a bottle of whiskey the suspect had stolen from the home and a cell phone was inside the bag.

The La Lucia homeowner also urged north Durban residents to be more vigilant.

“I have several outdoor beams which I installed at great cost but this suspect knew the limitations of it. He knew if he crawled on his stomach they wouldn’t pick him up. I urge residents to test these beams to make sure they work to avoid anything like this ever happening. I’ve now installed early warning detection sensors which are more prone to picking up movement,” he said.
