Thatch roof at Skukuza Airport catches fire

All passengers in the waiting lounge at national park’s airport were evacuated safely when the structure’s roof caught fire.

A thatch roof at Skukuza Airport in the Kruger National Park (KNP) caught on fire yesterday afternoon, while some passengers from the last flight were in the arrivals lounge.

According to the KNP’s spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, the cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is underway.

“No injuries were reported during the fire, and all the people who were at the airport were evacuated safely.

“Firefighters were shortly on the scene and managed to contain the fire. The airport has contingency plans in place to ensure smooth interim operations,” he said.

Phaahla says the damage is unknown at this stage. “This will form part of the park team’s investigations.”
