Thatch roof at Skukuza Airport catches on fire

No injuries were reported during the fire, as all the passengers in the waiting lounge had been safely evacuated.

A thatch roof at the Skukuza Airport in the Kruger National Park caught on fire on Sunday afternoon, October 6, while some passengers of the last flight were in the arrivals lounge.

According to the Kruger’s spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, the cause of the fire is unknown at this stage; however, an investigation is under way.

“No injuries were reported during the fire, and all the people who were at the airport were evacuated safely. Firefighters were shortly on the scene and managed to contain all the fire. The airport has contingency plans in place to ensure smooth interim operations tomorrow,” he said.

Phaahla added that the damages are also as yet unknown. This will form part of the park team’s investigations.
