Three people killed on R555 near eMalahleni

Three people were killed following a head on collission that took place on R555 Road between eMalahleni and Middelburg at 01:00 this morning.

The collission occurred between an articulated truck and a sedan.

Two people, a driver (male) and the female passenger, died on impact at the scene.

The third person, who passed on, was a motorist who upon arrival at the scene, was hit by another vehicle. It is believed that he may have been trying to help at the time.

One male passenger in the sedan sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Middelburg Provincial Hospital. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, bemoans these crashes saying that lives are needlessly lost.

He implored motorists to obey the rules and drive cautiously to avoid such deadly crashes.

“We must all play our part in road safety by obeying the rules. This include not overtaking when it is not safe to do so or speeding excessively. Our our law enforcement officers should continue to remain stricter on errant driver behaviour,” says the MEC.

MEC Shongwe also cautions members of the public to abide by COVID-19 Regulations and desist from being on the road between 22h00 and 04h00 during curfew.

He mentions that unless if people have valid permits to be on the road during curfew as this in line with prevailing Alert level 3.
