Toll payments: N1/N4 to adopt contactless system by 2025

Bakwena will introduce contactless toll payments from June, improving security and reducing fraud on the N1/N4 route.

From 1 June 2025, Bakwena will upgrade to contactless card payments on the N1/N4 route, enhancing security and reducing fraudulent toll transactions. Parys Gazette reports this upgrade will enable real-time payments, reducing the risk of stolen debit or credit cards being used by fraudsters at toll plazas.

In the meantime, Bakwena will continue to accept credit and fleet card magstripe payments, as well as cash and SANRAL tag payment methods at toll plazas.

Debit cards are not accepted.
