Tributes pour in for Nathi Mthethwa

Nathi Mthethwa's death sent shockwaves through both South Africa’s political circles and the international diplomatic community.

South Africa is mourning the death of its ambassador to France and former Cabinet minister, Nathi Mthethwa (57), who died in Paris yesterday.

French authorities confirmed that he had taken his own life, though investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.

The South African Government confirmed the news in a statement yesterday, describing Mthethwa as a ‘distinguished servant of the nation’ who dedicated his life to public service.

Mthethwa held several key ministerial portfolios during his career, including minister of police and minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

He also served on the board of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee and was a longstanding member of the ANC’s highest decision-making structures.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola said Mthethwa’s passing was a loss not only to South Africa but to the global diplomatic community.

“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” Lamola said.

Mthethwa had been tasked with strengthening bilateral relations between South Africa and France, a responsibility he took up just nine months ago.

The government extended its condolences to his wife, children, colleagues and friends, describing his death as a ‘period of immense grief’.

“We honour his legacy of unwavering patriotism and service to our nation,” the statement read.
