A truck driver arrested after a viral video allegedly showed him being assaulted by traffic officers near the Lebombo border faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, common assault, malicious damage to property and resisting arrest.

CPD Academy (CPDA) driver Sizwe Duma was granted R2 000 bail after appearing in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday (August 24). His case was postponed to 6 October for further investigation, SAPS spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed, reports the Lowvelder.

The charges follow a video circulating on social media that appears to show Duma leaving his parked truck on the N4 before a group of traffic officers approaches and an altercation breaks out. The circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DPDA) has confirmed that the incident is being investigated. Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the department was unable to comment on the traffic officers involved while the investigation is under way.

“We strongly condemn such behaviour from law enforcement officials who are supposed to uphold the law,” Mmusi said.

The department will also investigate reported problems at the Lebombo border, including lengthy delays that leave truck drivers waiting for extended periods before they can enter Mozambique.

CPDA condemns alleged assault

CPDA condemned the incident and said it was supporting its employee.

“CPDA is aware of the incident in which one of our driver trainers was assaulted. We condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms and are providing all possible assistance and support to our employee. All legal processes will unfold in due course.”

The investigation comes as concerns over conditions facing truck drivers travelling along the N4 to the Lebombo border continue to grow, with long queues and delays adding to tensions along the busy route into Mozambique.
