SAPS has confirmed that CPD Academy truck driver Sizwe Duma was arrested and granted R2 000 bail following a viral video showing an alleged assault by traffic officers.

Duma appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on August 24. SAPS spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo added that Duma faces multiple charges including reckless and negligent driving, common assault, malicious damage to property and resisting arrest. His case was postponed to October 6 for further investigation.

Upon further inquiry, the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison was unable to comment on the traffic officers involved in the incident, while department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

Border traffic queue turns tense

Duma was arrested after video footage showed he left his parked truck beside the N4, where a group of traffic officers approached and allegedly began to assault him.

Many truck drivers had been waiting in a long queue to enter Mozambique via the Lebombo border.

CPD Academy confirmed that Duma is one of its driver trainers, but academy director Natasha van Niekerk said she was unable to comment as the investigation is ongoing.
