Tshwane police officer killed by taxi driver in Midrand
The Midrand police are investigating the death of a Tshwane Metro police officer on 7 November during a stop-and-search operation.
Spokesperson for the Midrand police Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that the incident took place on the corner of the R55 and Summit Road at 9am when five Metro police officers were on duty conducting a stop-and-search.
The officers stopped a truck at the scene and were searching it when a speeding taxi skipped a stop sign and ran over the officer. Paramedics were called to the scene and the officer was pronounced dead.
Tlamela added that an investigation has been initiated into the nature of the accident. She said that the taxi driver was cooperative at the scene and has been made a suspect but has not been arrested.
“A docket and investigation has been opened. The police will be taking the case to the magistrate who will decide whether a warrant for the arrest of the taxi driver should be issued.”
