Ulundi court hands man life sentence for raping minor in Mahlabathini

A 34-year-old neighbour who threatened to kill a young KZN girl's family after assaulting her twice will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

A 34-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ulundi Regional Court for raping a 15-year-old neighbour in Mahlabathini, KZN.

Zululand Observer reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence handed down to the man, who attacked the mentally disabled girl in March 2021 and October 2022 after threatening to kill her family if she reported him.

Following the second assault, the teenager reported the matter to her schoolteacher, leading to clinic treatment and an alert to police, who arrested the perpetrator.

During the trial, prosecutor Khethiwe Buthelezi led the evidence of the complainant, her grandmother, and the doctor who examined the teenager.

Trauma details revealed

In her statement, the victim described the detrimental impact the incidents had on her life, stating that she struggles to sleep at night and is angry all the time.

In addition to the life sentence, the court declared the man unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his name to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
