Uncle behind bars for stabbing 1-year-old niece in the Western Cape

When a grandmother heard her grandchild screaming she went to investigate and discovered her son holding the toddler down with a knife pressed against her neck.

A 34-year-old man from Thembalethu will make his second court appearance in George tomorrow on a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his one-year-old niece in the neck and face.

According to an article published by George Herald, the man was arrested shortly after the incident at their family home in Zone 7 on Monday, January 27.

According to initial reports, the child’s mother was asleep in her room while the baby was in the care of the grandmother. The grandmother later placed the baby in her room to sleep before returning to the living room.

The suspect, who lives in a bungalow on the property, entered the house and went into the baby’s room. He then went into the kitchen before returning to the child’s room.

The grandmother then heard the child screaming and rushed to investigate. She discovered her son holding the toddler down with a knife pressed against her neck.

The baby suffered multiple stab wounds, including a severe wound to the neck near her left ear and smaller injuries to her chest and neck.

Desperate to save the child, the grandmother grabbed her and ran into the street, where emergency services were contacted.

The child was rushed to hospital and the suspect was arrested at the scene.
