Update: Soweto hostage-taker shoots girlfriend, kills himself
The woman is in a critical condition in hospital.
The Soweto hostage situation, which played out on Wednesday, ended in tragedy as the hostage-taker shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed a 37-year-old suspect died after he turned gun on himself moments after shooting his girlfriend, reports the Soweto Urban Online.
The hostage-taker had demanded a case of malicious damage to property against him be dropped and only then would he release the woman.
Following the shooting, the woman was rushed to hospital and is in a critical condition.
