Vereeniging municipality cuts electricity to owing government departments

The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) switched off electricity to private businesses and government departments who owe money for services.

It was a big embarrassment for most when officials came knocking at the offices of the South African Police Service Training Center, Labour Department and Gauteng Offices in Vereeniging wielding a warrant to switch off their power supply on Monday.

Members of the Red Ants and ELM officials paraded outside behind the main building before they went on to switch off the businesses and government buildings owing millions of rands to the ELM.

Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging owes ELM R443 953. The hospital has been slapped with a final written notice of demand to pay within three days.

Power supply to a SAPS training center, that owes the ELM R700 000, was switched off. The hospital and other businesses will be liable to all cost related to the disconnection process as reflected in a notice.
