Video: 1 arrested after shooting at Sandton restaurant

A shooting incident occurred after people forced entry into the restaurant without being searched by the bouncers.

The police are investigating two counts of attempted murder and assault after a shooting incident at a restaurant in Sandton in the early hours of Saturday.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, four people forced entry into the restaurant without being searched by the bouncers.

“They further allegedly assaulted the bouncer at the door and pointed a firearm at him, causing the other bouncer to draw his firearm. That is when the random shooting started, leaving two people injured,” explains Nevhuhulwi.

She adds a man has since been arrested and is currently under police guard at a local hospital.

Restaurant apologises for shooting

Fourways Review reports that the club where the shooting occurred, Tempo Luxury Restaurant, has issued a letter of apology after the shooting. The publication states the club says business tycoon Sphamandla Mabonga was shot in his ribs during the incident.

“Regrettably, the incident rapidly escalated and resulted in the wounding of two of our staff members as well as the said individual.”

The statement from the restaurant states the incident occurred outside their premises, despite several videos where patrons can be seen running and taking cover under the tables of the restaurant.

It adds: “None of our patrons inside the establishment were harmed. As the Tempo family, we would like to extend our heartfelt apologies to the victims affected by this incident. We are fully committed to supporting them during their recovery. Additional apologies are extended to our patrons who witnessed this unfortunate incident.

“We are co-operating fully with law enforcement authorities in their investigation and we are taking immediate steps to review and enhance our security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
