Video: 2 die in Richards Bay municipal shooting
Friction between the bodyguards of a municipal manager and a mayor led to bloodshed.
Two people were killed in a double shooting at the Richards Bay Civic Centre this morning.
One of the deceased is reported to be the bodyguard of municipal manager Nkosenye Zulu, while another bodyguard, who was shot in the civic centre’s stairway, is that of mayor Xolani Ngwezi.
The second bodyguard, who was the shooter, was killed while fleeing the scene.
While it’s still unclear what transpired, it’s alleged there was an altercation between the two bodyguards in the council chamber’s foyer.
According to the uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha, a pre-budget meeting was taking place with all of the top executives, close to where the shooting took place.
“We are all in total shock at this tragic occurrence,” says Botha.
The entire building is a crime scene and has been sealed off to the public.
While the motive is not known, it is not believed to be political.
Employees were in shock and gathered outside as police cordoned off the area. The civic centre has been closed.
