WATCH: Two die in Richards Bay municipal shooting

Friction between bodyguards of top executives ends in bloodshed

Two people have been killed in a double shooting incident at the Richards Bay Civic Centre this (Thursday) morning.

The first deceased is reported to be the bodyguard attached to Municipal Manager, Nkosenye Zulu while the other bodyguard who was shot on the stairway of the Civic Centre, is attached to the Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi.

The second bodyguard, who was the shooter himself, was killed while fleeing the scene.

At this stage it is unclear what had transpired but it is alleged there was an altercation between the two bodyguards at the foyer of the Council Chambers.

According to the uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor, Christo Botha, a pre-budget meeting was taking place with all the top executives in attendance very close to where the shooting took place.

“We are all in total shock at this tragic occurrence,” said Botha.

The entire building is a crime scene and has been sealed off to the public.

While the motive is not known, it is not believed to have happened in a political context.

Employees are in a state of shock and have gathered outside as police cordoned off the area. The Civic Centre has been closed.

This is a developing story…
