Video: Alleged drunk driver causes havoc on KZN roads, injures officer
A suspected drunk driver who assaulted a traffic officer and crashed into multiple vehicles during a dramatic chase on the N3 has been arrested and faces several charges.
Chaos erupted on the N3 northbound near Chota Motala Road in the early hours of Sunday morning when an alleged drunk driver sparked a dramatic sequence of events.
According to KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma, a female motorist contacted the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) on Friday evening, reporting that a white Mahindra bakkie had crashed into her vehicle and fled the scene.
Duma said the RTI team spotted and stopped the speeding white Mahindra Bakkie on Chota Motala Road northbound.
“When confronted, the drunk driver assaulted the RTI officer and fled. Whilst fleeing, the Mahindra collided with other vehicles on the N3,” said Duma in a statement.
“The drunk driver drove through the Howick area and collided with another vehicle before heading towards Hilton via the R103.”
He said on Hilton Avenue, once again, the fleeing vehicle collided with a light delivery vehicle.
He said it took a traffic officer to stop the steel fleeing vehicle by rear-ending it.
“We wish our officer a speedy recovery from his injuries. He showed bravery and went an extra mile to save innocent lives,” he said.
“The drunk motorist was arrested and has been remanded in custody. He faces several charges, such as assault and fleeing the scene of the accident. He is also facing reckless and negligent driving charges.”

Meanwhile, on the N2 southbound, an IT specialist was arrested in Parkrynie. He was caught driving at 192 km/h at a range of 344.8 meters.
“Months ago, I mandated the team to clean up our road networks by coming down very hard on reckless and drunk motorists. It is for these reasons we have advertised 278 posts of traffic officers. This is part of strengthening our team,” he said.
