VIDEO: Another remote jammer caught on camera

Two suspected car jammers have been arrested after CCTV footage emerged showing one of the suspects opening the backseat door of a parked car in Douglasdale, Johannesburg, and seemingly taking something out of the car.

Night Guard Security spokesperson Trevor Hepburn said their operations team responded to a report of suspicious activity at a shopping centre in Douglasdale on July 20 at about 5pm,Fourways Review reported.

In the video, the victim is seen parking his car at the shopping centre and walking inside. Shortly afterwards, a white vehicle parks next to his car. One suspect is seen getting out, opening the victim’s backseat door and seemingly taking something from the car before fleeing the scene with his accomplice.

“The suspicious men were monitored and followed across the road to a neighbouring centre. Our operator noticed a white Ford Fiesta which had been implicated in numerous car-jamming incidents in previous weeks,” added Hepburn.

“When the team approached the suspects, they attempted to flee, but the team then blocked their escape. They were then detained until police arrived,” Hepburn said.

Fake number plates were stuck to the original number plate of the car and multiple long-range jamming devices were found in the vehicle along with electronics that were assumed to be stolen, he added.

An alleged victim of the car jammers, Justin Solyom, said his laptop had been stolen from his car when he stopped at a filling station in Olivedale on July 11. When he returned to the filling station, he noticed the laptop was missing.

“I think they might have been following me. I hope now that they have been arrested; I could possibly get my laptop back,” Solyom said.

In a separate incident, CCTV footage emerged showing an alleged car jammer opening the backseat door of a vehicle parked in front of a primary school in Alberton, south of Johannesburg, last Monday.

On the footage, the suspect is seen coming out of a bakkie, disappearing from the camera’s view before returning to the victim’s vehicle. He opens the backseat door, takes a bag and walks away brazenly.
