VIDEO: Cash-in-transit heist at filling station

A 32-year-old suspect has been arrested after a robbery at a petrol station in Berea, Durban over the weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said five armed suspects entered an Engen garage on Ridge Road at about 7:40am on Saturday morning and took two boxes of cash.

“One of the security guards was shot and sustained injuries. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway Toyota Corolla,” Zwane added.

Two video clips of the incident were posted online by the Intelligence Bureau SA, showing the suspects robbing the filling station before firing shots at a cash-in-transit van, Rekord Centurionreported.

The first video shows an armed man in a balaclava jumping over the till. Three Engen cashiers swiftly walk out of the shop before two other men walk in and hand a bag to the first suspect.

In the second clip, two men are seen jumping out of a car and running towards the cash-in-transit van holding assault rifles. They then fire shots at the driver’s side of the van. As the cash-in-transit van reverses, a total of four armed men run from the garage towards the getaway car. The suspects are then seen fleeing.

Zwane added that charges of business robbery and attempted murder were being investigated, while the arrested suspect was due in court soon.
