Video: Child lights match under bed – Mpumalanga home destroyed

A blaze sparked by a child playing with matches reduced a house to ashes, destroying nearly all of a family's possessions.

A house in Mthambama Street in Wesselton, Mpumalanga, was destroyed in a fire yesterday afternoon, leaving sisters Thembi Vilakazi and Siphesihle Vilakazi, along with two young children, homeless.

Highvelder reports that the blaze began when a child lit a match under a bed, and it rapidly engulfed the home.

Thankfully, the family was not inside at the time, and the child immediately ran to safety upon realising what had happened.

Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Services attended the scene, but the family now faces the heartbreak of losing nearly all their possessions, including furniture, clothing and other treasured belongings.

Relatives have provided temporary shelter, but the path to rebuilding will be long.

At this stage, the family’s greatest need is food and clothing.

Those wishing to assist can contact Vilakazi at 066 013 6919.
