Video: Cops arrest 11 Springs miners during violent protest

A shop steward's car was set alight during protest action by Gold One miners who had to be dispersed by the police.

Eleven striking Gold One miners affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union have been arrested following a violent protest outside the mine’s main entrance on Sunday and yesterday.

Armed with axes, knobkerries and petrol bombs, the miners went head on with the police, who had to use teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the miners.

During the strike on Sunday night, a car belonging to a National Union of Mineworkers shop steward was set alight.

It is reported that the striking miners want to be represented by a different union.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed they were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property.
